Medicare
A GP mental health treatment plan allows for a Medicare rebate for 10 counselling sessions within a calendar year. To receive this rebate, you will need to have a consultation with the GP and receive a referral letter which specifically requests treatment and states the number of approved sessions.
Rebates can only be processed from the date of the referral letter. Paediatricians and psychiatrists can also refer for counselling under the same scheme. Other Medicare treatment options are available for eating disorders and chronic disease management.
Private health funds
Private health funds will often provide a rebate for counselling services. Each fund uses a different item code, and you will need to contact your health fund to ensure that psychology is covered, and to ask which codes your health funds use. I am do not process private health rebates and you will need to lodge these yourself.
NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will often fund therapy support. If you intend to use NDIS funding, I will need to know whether you are self or plan-managed, and if so the contact details of the plan manager. You will need to make sure that you have psychology as an approved service in your NDIS plan.
Full psychoeducational Cognitive Assessment – $2000 exc GST. Discount available for multiple assessments
Includes:
Full cognitive assessment
Payment terms
A deposit of $500 is paid on booking your assessment, and a further $500 is paid on each assessment session (generally 3 hours). The balance is paid at the 1 hour feedback session at completion where we go through the report together and all questions are answered.
Medicare
At present, most assessment services are privately funded, and there are very few rebates available. If you are currently under the care of a paediatrician or psychiatrist, and are under the age of 25 years, then you may be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate under the “Complex neurodevelopmental disorder or eligible disability” scheme. To receive this rebate, you will need to have a consultation with the paediatrician or psychiatrist, and receive a referral letter which specifically requests an assessment of a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. If the letter does not specifically state this purpose (or something similar, such as a request for an Autism assessment, or the Helping Children with Autism scheme), then no rebate will be able to be applied. GP mental health treatment plans are not able to be used for assessments.
Private health funds
Private health funds will often provide a rebate for assessment services. You will need to contact your health fund to ensure that psychology is covered, and to ask which codes your health funds use.
